Earthquakes are a dime a dozen and most are nothing more that the minor clashes of rocks below the surface of the earth. However the daily tremblors increase in magnitude at times and small tremors can be warnings signs or even after shocks of massive earthquakes.
Tectonic plates along the Pacific Ocean or what is commonly referred to as the "Ring of Fire" account for 80 % of all tremors. The ring of fire is responsible for much of the volcanic activity on earth and vulcans seem to speak in tremors.
As the tectonic plates manueuver against each other in what is a natural earth evolution process the stress causes fault lines or fault zones that are areas prevalent to large volume quake activity.
Seismic waves are measurable with the technology used by seismologists. The measurements of quakes are generally given on a Richter scale where 1 point of magnitube is a compound of ten times the strength of the last point. For example a 6 point quake is ten time more powerful that a 5 point quake.
8 point quakes occur somewhere on earth on average about once per year and according to National Geographic are responsible for about 10 thousand human fatalities.
